Intro & Lab Safety Course

The Intro & Lab Safety course is required for safety certification for all new labmembers and is valid under the conditions listed below*. To complete the course, new labmembers must:

  1. View the Intro, Safety and gowning videos (three, in total; about 45 minutes)
  2. Read the Intro & Safety manuals (two manuals)
  3. Complete the safety test.
  4. Schedule and complete the escorted safety tour.

To register for the course and lab tour, contact the Labmember Services Administrator. Please ensure all your forms and accounting information (purchase order or SU account number) are complete. The deadline for submitting forms is the no later than 5:00pm the Thursday preceding the desired safety tour. After receipt of your paperwork and providing there is space available, you will be notified by email confirming your registration.

Staff-guided safety tours are conducted every Monday morning at 10 am (unless it is a University holiday, in which case, the tour will be held at 10 am Tuesday.) To register for a lab tour, contact Labmember Services Administrator. Before the tour, you must have watched the videos, read the manuals, and returned the completed safety test -- the test need not be graded, but must be turned in at the time of the tour.

For the lab tour, you will be donning a head-to-toe bunnysuit over your regular clothes, so we ask that you please wear appropriate attire:

  • light, comfortable clothing (heavy sweaters or long, narrow skirts are not recommended);
  • fully enclosed shoes (no sandals or open-toe shoes).
  • If you wear a brimmed hat or other large headcovering, please be prepared to remove it for the tour.

Once you have completed the lab tour and turned in your safety acknowledgement form (in your red training material folder, available from the Labmember Services Administrator), you may begin scheduling and taking training immediately. However, please allow up to two days for the safety tests to be graded and your Coral account to be formally set up.

*Safety certification is valid as long as there is documentable (i.e., Coral) use of equipment in the lab. Certification lapses after 6 months of the initial certification date for new labmembers, if there is no equipment use or training in the lab. Certification lapses for any active labmember if there is no equipment use for more than one year. When certification lapses, the Intro & Safety Course must be completed again.
