Right now we are dead in the water. Somehow the computer was turned off and will not boot up. I'm searching for a start-up disk (NT version 4.0), so that we can begin the diagnostics. Finding antivirus software compatible with NT is yet another issue. I have a call in to Vecco, but so far have only been able to talk to voice mails. The quickest is to reinstall the software. Vecco is trying to compile an installation disk which matches our hardware configuration. The delay relates to an undocumented upgrade. Our software/hardware does not match their database. I've taken pictures of our control boards and sent this out at the end of last week. When I tried to follow up on Friday and today, one of the two parties have been out of the office for the day. I have not been able to confirm they have the necessary information to generate the replacement software, so I don't have an estimated time the system will be functional. The second approach is to update the software and replace the computer and potentially the drive board. This is the 60-90 day quotation. I have received approval for this upgrade, but the PO has not been placed. This is not part of the critical path to get the system up and running since the software reinstall should be quicker. Tech support told me they do not believe they can provide us software compatible with our system. As a result, I have submitted a PO for a complete computer and software upgrade. I do not have a delivery date. I am begging Veeco to see what they can do in rushing the delivery. There is some good news. With the new upgrade, I believe we will be able to use USB memory devices. It leaves me with the impression we should receive the new computer system soon. I do not know how different the operating software will be or if some re-training will be required. I did confirm, the computer and operating software will be USB compatible. As a result, I do not plan on hooking the system up to the internet. Regards, Hi Ed- Okay, I have it ready, with any luck all the paperwork will get done today and it will go out the door. Pat is on the road, actually I will be too as of noon, I think by the time I can find out id it did ship you should have it, but I'll try anyway. The computer has arrived and I'm hooking it up. I will do what I can to get it running before I leave tonight. I do have one concern and that relates to the calibration of the scanner. If the files do not exist, you will not be able to make quantitative measurements (the numbers will be bogus). I have to get further with the installation before I know. I will try and remember to send out another update at the end of the day. If you want to start making reservations, go ahead with the initial time slot being 6pm Friday night. Ed From edmyers at stanford.edu Fri Oct 27 18:56:36 2006 From: edmyers at stanford.edu (Ed Myers) Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 18:56:36 -0700 Subject: AFM2 -Green Light Message-ID: <6.2.5.6.2.20061027184547.02723290@stanford.edu> All, I just finished taking some quick scans on the AFM. The software is very similar in feel to the older version. I don't think any retraining is needed. If you feel uncomfortable or want help, please let me know. A couple of points to note: 1) The login name has changed to "nanoscope" and there is no password. I made the change on the sheet of paper on the side of the acoustic cabinet. 2) The system will not go back on the world wide internet. We will put it on the Shadow Internet which only allows connections to Stanford computers. The computer still needs to be registered with Stanford before it can connected. 3) The USB locations are on the lower left side of the computer. These will be easier to get to than the ones in the back. Why they are not on the front, I don't know. 4) There are a lot of helpful and information files which can be opened using the short cut on the main screen. 5) I don't have an appropriate sample to test the calibration. Veeco has all of our scanner calibrations on file from the last repair. My hope is they used these files when they built our software. A phone conversation indicted this might have happened. If you have a critical measurement need and you have a know sample you may want to verify you get the same answer. Let me know any feedback you might have. Ed
