Here is what I found: 1. There wasn't a bulb in there at all. I believe, based on resistance measurements that both of the bulbs in the drawer are good. I used on of them. 2. It appears as if someone has partially damaged the socket into which the bulb sits. If you just slide a bulb in, it will not likely result in good electrical contact. By fiddling with bulb position carefully and by measuring the resistance trhough the bulb at the black connector that attaches to the front panel of the light power supply box, I was able to position the bulb so that it is functional. With much more damage, the socket will need to be replaced .... which doesn't look like a fun job. 3. The white wires that power the lamp seem to be fed through a white Molex connector to get into the aluminum shrouded part of the housing where the bulb lives. Not only have the "ears" of this Molex connector been damaged but, at some point, the connected was pushed into the lamp housing close enough that the plastic of the Molex is slightly browned .... not fully burned, but it would not have to be too much closer to the bub to catch fire. So, I believe that it is currently functional and, hopefully, will stay that way for some time. Future bulb replacements will have to be done carefully, likely with the help of a VOM to assure eletrical contact. At some point, the damaged ceramic socket may need to be replaced.
