Message-ID: <3F2C2B35.2A81B1F9@snf.stanford.edu> Hi Mike, et al -- Could I please borrow your Win2K installation disk again? I'm afraid someone inadvertently deleted all the user files on that second PC (the ones I was finally able to load up.) Unfortunately, this occured before I got around to setting up a backup contingency. It's a very long story, but I'd like to try loading 2K on the second drive and use Norton to unerase the lost files (the utility doesn't seem to work on XP.) Mary -- Mary X. A fellow is asking about getting his files of the AFM2 computer... This is an NT system. I could plop my Zip drive on the printer port, but can't run it without loading the zip program -- which we can't do because we don't have the administrative password for this system. Would you fellows happen to know the password? Barring that, are there other options for saving large image files off this system? It's got USB ports, but it is, as I said, running NT. There's a network cable there, but it doesn't look like it's functioning... I will look into seeing if we can upgrade the system without affecting the AFM operation. But even if it's feasible, we should still like to back everything up before doing anything to it, so that brings us back to how we can store large files from this system... Have any of you worked on this system and if so, do you have any advice or background to offer? Thanks, Mary -- Mary X. Between the EE, CPIMA, and NNUN programs, we have 17 or so undergraduate students from different schools who will be doing research projects at SNF for various Stanford faculty. They will begin converging onto the lab next week. On behalf of the process staff, I just wanted to let you know that since they are here for only a few weeks, they may given priority for some training and equipment access. When you see any of them in the lab, please take a moment to say "hi" and feel free to tell them about the wonders and joys of grad school (as it seems that at least one per year eventually makes his/her way back here as a grad student.) I didn't start it but it is nearly ready to go. Secondly, since the taskbar in Solaris 8 has a link to netscape, I would argue that we no longer need to start one for them ... While this will not eliminate the netscape problem, it will mean that only those people who actually need netscape will start it ... I've made a change to the file that controls this: /etc/skel/.dt/sessions/sessionetc and removed the line: netscape -iconic& Now it is a matter, I think of writing a script that basically does: for USER in (list of all user names in /home/User) cp /etc/skel/.dt/sessions/sessionet /home/User/$USER/.dt/sessions/sessionetc chown $USER:users /home/User/$USER/.dt/sessions/sessionetc done; Well, that's not exactly correct, but you get the idea ... Finally, we need to look around for a more reasonable browser .... I'm now using mozilla on my NT and don't have nearly the number of problems that I did with netscape. I fear, however, when I looked into getting mozilla on a Solaris that there was something about the glibc libraries that needed to be compiled with the Solaris compiler instead of this gcc (at least that's what I recall) that sort of stopped me in my tracks on that project ... I can't believe it, but if you decide not to dispose of any of this equipment, please make sure the new owner is identified properly in your system, and that the junk does not end up back in the computer room.
