Message-ID: <3F0997DB.BB70ECA2@snf.stanford.edu> Hi guys -- I followed your advice and got a new PC (and it's TINY!) Could I bother you for a few things? First, could I borrow the installation CD's for LEdit? Second, I would like to wipe my old PC and place it in the CAD room for people to use for LEdit -- is this OK with you? (I was planning on putting Windows 2K, LEdit, Acrobat Reader, and not much else.) What do you think? Mary -- Mary X. There were a number of problems including two full disks on crystal, two full partitions on lattice, corrupt file systems on lattice, and physical faults on the disk drive on lattice. With some work, I was able to repair all the problems except the disk fault on lattice. However, I believe that lattice can be used for everything we need: TYCOM functions and furnace status. Since I had to spend some quality time with lattice in the computer room, I did a little sleuthing. Lattice is a MicroVAX 3600 which was first introduced by DEC in September of 1987 (16 years ago). The current lattice hardware was installed at CIS on June 2, 1988 (over 15 years ago) and has been running continuously since that time. Lattice has a CVAX microprocessor (90ns) and 32 MB of ECC main memory. Lattice is running a version of the ULTRIX operating system released in early 1990 (13 years ago). This is amazing! We can probably start charging admission to see this antique still in operation. Here's my point: we cannot rely upon this machine any longer! We must make other arrangements to handle these TYCOM and furnace functions. Next time it fails, we'll need to power it down and haul it to the dump. I got a call from Nancy and email from Mary. I couldn't log on at any of the sunrays. On the sunray console, there was a message indicating that swap was full. The machine was in bad shape, I could do very little other than reboot. However, I did do df -k with the following results: root at sunray # df -k Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on /dev/dsk/c0t3d0s0 7695670 2964947 4653767 39% / /proc 0 0 0 0% /proc fd 0 0 0 0% /dev/fd /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0 6638682 5249041 1323255 80% /home swap 12456 12456 0 100% /tmp /proc 0 0 0 0% /var/opt/SUNWbb/root/proc /tmp/SUNWut/sessions 12456 12456 0 100% /var/opt/SUNWbb/root/tmp/SUNWut/sessions /tmp/SUNWut/units 12456 12456 0 100% /var/opt/SUNWbb/root/tmp/SUNWut/units atu.snffab.stanford.edu:/home/User 30248368 3742336 26203544 13% /mnt/home/User atu.snffab.stanford.edu:/home/Devel 20166016 4315776 15648576 22% /mnt/home/Devel I also did a .version at the ok (OBP) prompt to check versions of the boot PROMs on our system boards. It listed three boards in slots (?) 1, 7, and 9. I didn't want to stop the reboot to write down the details, but the versions were something like: board 1 version 1.1.xx board 7 version 3.2.26 board 9 version 3.2.29 Clearly one of the boards has an PROM version that is way out of date. I did note from a quick search that improperly flash updating EPROMs can void waranties. We better get Sun out here to fix this one. SYSADMIN response requested Message-ID: <3F25678D.452191F0@snf.stanford.edu> Greetings All, We are still encountering difficulties with user logins and processes on Shades.stanford.edu. After your recent repairs I have attempted to add several users onto shades and have run into problems: users added: cshen chongfei shen sumita Sumita Pennathur These logins start but hang up after launching the CDE environment. After a few minutes your get the normal screen view -- but immediately a pink pop up box launches that has no dialog in the box and if the [OK] button is functional it clears the box and triggers what may be a core dump and recovery. Request: 1. Could you please take a look at the setup of shades and see what might be causing these problems. I have a wait list of people to add to shades and many other current users cannot get their work done on the system these last two weeks. 2. Could you please see if you can locate account user: sumita I had expected this to be added to home2 (explicitly /export/home2 ) but cannot locate her files there! 3. Please let me know when we can resume operations as normal and begin to migrate new users on to shades again. Sunray has seemed very slow lately, so maybe I'm comparing it to that, and I've only used the new system for one day. But it certainly seems fine.
