Actually, I've just made the change so that it looks for "ODMGException" ,,, Note: with luck, it will also begin to restart the servers by itself ... in the past, I had run the cron job that does "servers status" (and more recently "servers check") as labnet. For servers status, that is fine .... however, I realized that "servers check" needs to be run as root so that, if it needs to restart the servers, it can su to each of the managers. I had forgotten that labnet does not have those privileges. So, unless I have screwed up, the next time that you get one of those messages, the servers should have already been restarted. Message-ID: <3DD6711A.7A1B9EF@snf.stanford.edu> As you likely recall, we recently had a brief period during which people were unable to enable/disable some pieces of equipment on Coral. This turned out to be due to a failure of the APC battery backup UPS that we use on the system. More detailed study showed that the internal sealed lead acid batteries had gotten weak. When I measured them they had an open-circuit voltage of appoximately ... they are supposed to be 12+ volts. In general, many of the APC units run a self-test every two weeks ... unfortunately, many of our UPS units are inspected only rarely. So, I'll bet that this unit showed a problem for some time ... that we never saw. According to APC technical folks, if the internal battery voltage falls below 11 volts, the APC will shutdown and not restart ... this, of course, ultimately resulted in the Walker computer shutting down. Replacement of the batteries fixed the situation ... and walker is back in business. However, I suggest that our Christmas shutdown might be a good time to check some of our other APC units. If people would send me location, model number, and serial number, I will try to assemble a list of these units. I also found that Stanford has an account with a company called Insight that represents APC and sells us APC stuff for about 10% less than APC will ... well, their price on replacement batteries, at least, was 10% less. Plus the batteries come with a prepaid mailer so that the old battery can be shipped back to APC for recycling. Originally, the encryption stuff known as the Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) was either a specially dowloaded package from Sun or also available from certain third-party providers. We actually use something from Australia because it was free, public domain, and had an implementation of RSA encryption that we use for encrypting/decrypting your remote username and password. That all worked fine with Java prior to version 1.4.0. With 1.4.0, Sun automatically includes their JCE stuff. They have a provision for adding third party providers ... but they have to be "signed" with a certificate from Sun. The stuff that we used to use is not ... So, there are a couple of things to do to deal with this: one that you can do now, should fix your situation immediately and then we are working on a more permanent fix to this problem. What you can do: 1. Check that Java Web Start is using Java 1.4.0 or newer ... you can do this by starting the Java Web Start application, click on the "Preferences" menu item and select the "Java" tab in the window that pops up. I suspect that you'll see that it lists a "Platform Verion" of 1.4 and a product version that looks something like 1.4.0_01 or 1.4.1_1. While you are there, look at the column named "Command" and widen it a bit if need be. This tells you where java in installed on your machine. Although I don't know about XP, it probably starts with something like "C:\Program Files\Java\" .... 2. Somewhere in that directory tree (probably something like C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\lib) you will find a file named "jce.jar". This is the Sun JCE stuff. To disable this, I would suggest re-naming it "jce.jar.ignore". (You don't want to delete it completely ... because you'll need it again). Once you do this, remote coral should begin to work. Now, for the more permanent solution: We are currently testing a new cryptographic provider named "Bouncy Castle" (I don't know why they are named that ...), that is free, public domain, and has a signed provider that works with the existing Sun JCE stuff. I'm hopeful that we will release that version of remote coral sometime next week. When we do, you'll need to go back in and re-re-name jce.jar.ignore back to the original name of jce.jar. Sorry for the long winded explanation, but I suspect that this should fix your immediate problem and then we'll have a better long-term fix shortly. Good luck, John
