I've got a hunch that it has to do with the version of Java that your Java Web Start is trying to run. Can you: 1. Fire up Java Web Start 2. Under the "File" menu item, select "Preferences" and then select the "Java" tab. 3. What value does it list for Platform Version and Product Version does it list? I'm guessing that the problem occurs with one or two older versions of Java. Once you send me that, I propose that you install a new Java Runtime Environment (which also installs a new version of Java Web Start. Under your computer's Control Panel, select "Add/Remove Programs" and remove Java (likely listed as Java Runtime Environment). Then go to: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html There, look for the link that says "Download J2SE JRE" and select that. (You DON'T want the one that says J2EE, or SDK, or NetBeans IDE with SDK .... those are all much bigger and don't contain anything that you need). You also don't want to download the stuff that is called Java 5.0. Go ahead and download and install that version of Java (which should also download and install a new version of Java Web Start). Then go to http://snf.stanford.edu/coral/etc/coral.jnlp to try the remote client again. Let me know what you find ... The only way for me to log in was to use the "failsafe" desktop configuration, which does allow full functionality (such as using multiple windows, etc.). How do I fix this? Thanks! Message-ID: <41938734.6040808@snf.stanford.edu> Bill and Mike: As Bill and I discussed yesterday, we've reconfigured sshd on several machines so that it will only allow ssh connections from "behind the firewall" machines. In general, there is a sshd_config file either in /etc/ssh (for OpenSSH) or /etc/ssh2 (for the university licensced version of SSH Communications). THey have a configuration parameter ListenAddress that, by default, is either not defined or defined to be any. If that is changed do "ListenAddress 192.168.0.174" on atu (where 192.168.0.174 is the private IP address of atu) then it will only accept ssh connections coming in from that side and won't accept ssh connections coming into the 171.64.101.174 (atu.stanford.edu) network card. I've done this on atu, sunstar, spf, and labnet that are, I think, most of our machines that have both inside and outside access. Sunray and walker, having only private cards. should already be invisible. That leaves, I think, snf and opencoral ... which both need outside world ssh connections. If I have a chance, I may look at the logs and see if adding those trouble IP addresses to /etc/hosts.deny to see if that helps ... even though those trouble IP addresses are likely a moving target. So, we should check /var/log/messages on some of these machinese (particularly atu and sunstar) to see if the troublesome ssh attempts have stopped.
