Let me start with two of the most likely. First, our cryptographic engine does not run under Java 1.5 so make sure that your Java WebStart is using Java 1.4.2. The second possibility as described by John Shott: We have seen cases in which access to one or more of the libraries on Campus has altered a setting in Java Web Start ... that causes Remote Coral to break. To check this out, I'd start by opening up Java Web Start itself (you should have either a Java Web Start icon on your desktop or you should be able to find it in your Start Menu. Once the Java Web Start window opens up, select "Preferences" from under the "File" menu. That will pop up a new window ... Under the tab labelled "General", there are settings for Proxies.? In some cases, we've seen that some other application has set this to something like "proxy2.stanford.edu". If this is the case,? this will cause remote coral not to work. If that is the case, I'd suggest that you either select "None" or "Use Browser - Direct Connection". If neither of these work, please email me a copy of your Java WebStart client log so that I can troubleshoot the problem. Under the tab labelled "Java", you will find a list of installed Java Runtime Versions. Confirm that a 1.4.2 version is the only enabled version. To avoid any confusion, I would go to the "Add or Remove Programs" category in the Windows Control Panel and remove the Java 1.5 version. If this doesn't work, then you can generate a client log as follows. Once again under "Preferences" in Java Web Start, choose the tab labelled "Advanced". Check the "Log Output" option and choose a log file name in the box below. Then email me this file. Here's the problem. You downloaded version 1.4.2_08 which was just released. In fact, it was released so recently we hadn't yet tested Coral with it. I just now downloaded it and found that Coral's cryptographic engine will not work with this version. However, I did confirm that it will work with 1.4.2_07. This version can be downloaded from the following location: http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.2_07/index.html I apologize for the inconvenience. I believe that I can modify our JNLP files so that members will be forced to use a version of Java that is between 1.4.2_02 and 1.4.2_07 until our cryptographic provider has a version that will work 1.4.2_08 and 1.5. Compare your concise statement of the facts with "Coral is not working." From your response I can quickly see that Coral is not the problem at all, but that we have one of the following: a hardware problem on the E3500, an operating system problem, or a problem with the sunray manager software (most likely). I restarted the sunray manager software, and all is well. I tried to logon to Coral from Irvine(I used to be able to do that, I setup the remote password when I was in SNF) earlier this week. But I could not. I contacted Maureen Baran about this. She said that it's because my account has been de-activated. She asked me to submit a PO to re-activate my account. This afternoon, I got her email said my account has been re- activated and I should be able to logon to Coral remotely. I tried, but I still can not logon. I have been trying to reach someone in SNF since 2:30 this afternoon, but nobody is there. Because I have some fabrication need to be done at SNF to meet a deadline, I must get access to Coral ASAP to make reservation and schedule my trip to SNF. So could you please help me check about this? Here is my info: Dawei Wang, University of California at Irvine, Coral logon name: dwang Acct #: 1DAW123(this is the acct # I had before, I am not sure if it was changed when they re-activated my account) Thank you very much, Dawei From bmurray at snf.stanford.edu Sat Apr 23 12:50:47 2005 From: bmurray at snf.stanford.edu (Bill Murray) Date: Sat, 23 Apr 2005 12:50:47 -0700 (PDT) Subject: My coral account In-Reply-To: <2484.128.195.183.192.1114213254.squirrel@webmail.uci.edu> Message-ID: Dawei, According to the Coral logs, your remote password was last set on July 26th of 2003. It appears that your password has not been updated recently. If you cannot remember your password from July of 2003, then give me a call at my office (650-725-3639), and I will set your remote password for you. I should be in my office all afternoon. However, I will be taking a lunch break shortly. Bill Murray On Fri, 22 Apr 2005 daweiw at uci.edu wrote: > Dear Sir/madam, > > This is Dawei Wang from UC Irvine, a user of SNF. Bluewater was found to be compromised a few weeks ago and was taken off the network on Friday 4/15 right before noon. You shouldn't see any attempts from that IP/machine after that. We've been getting complaints about sol4 all morning and have alerted the user of the machine. Hopefully, he'll get it off the network himself and I won't have to be aggressive. If not, we'll block the IP until the machine can be cleaned. I'll keep your mail in the security database in case either of the admins want to do some forensics and need activity reports. Thanks for the vigilance - and happy computing. Stanford Computer Security: I hope that this is the proper email address to send this type of complaint ... if it is not, can you please help me to determine the proper place to send this. My name is John Shott and I work in the CIS building on campus and oversee a handful of Linux and Solaris machines. In looking over the logs on opencoral.stanford.edu, there has been an increasing number of "SSH attacks". However, this week, for the first time, I noticed 2 of these attacks coming from Stanford machines. I'm hopeful that you can look into this and stop this anti-social behavior. The two machines responsible for this appear to be: bluewater.stanford.edu (171.64.228.35) and sol4.stanford.edu (171.64.112.39). bluewater.stanford.edu made 877 SSH attempts on opencoral.stanford.edu on April 15 from about 8:55 a.m. to about 9:35 a.m. sol4.stanford.edu made about 250 SSH attempts on opencoral.stanford.edu on April 23 from about 10:25 a.m. to about 10:40 a.m. If you need any further information, please don't hesitate to contact me.
