Message-ID: <399C2A6A.34BB12EF@snf.stanford.edu> SNF Lab Members: As many of you are painfully aware, we have had a number of problems with SunRays getting in a permanently "hourglassed" condition ... they seem to be waiting for something indefinitely ... in general, it appears to happen to most folks before the netscape icon appears and before the Coral application starts so we believe that it is not a problem related to the Coral application itself locking up. We have been working with Sun to try to eliminate this problem ... but, thus far, they don't have a fix. However, we do, at least, have a key stroke sequence that will clear this problem once it has happened: To clear one of these sessions hit: + 4 Backspaces. That is hold down the and keys and hit Backspace 4 times in a row. Within a short time, this should clear the session and return to the login prompt. Also, please remember that everyone should be using a smart card in there. With this fix there is no reason for not having a card and for not using it! Message-ID: Dear SNF Co-workers: As many of you already know, my last day working for the Stanford Nanofabrication Facility will be this Friday, August 25th. You may still see me in the lab on occasion, since I have accepted a position with Dr. Fabian Pease and will be working with his students. If you have any questions about "who will be doing..." please ask John Shott or Jim McVittie. It has been a pleasure working with you. Message-ID: <39A305BF.E14180C0@snf.stanford.edu> SNF Lab Members: We are working with folks from Sun to try to pinpoint the cause of the "permanently wedged with the mini-hourglass" condition that some of you see periodically. Sun has helped us to institute more detailed logging of each session startup to see if we can find out specifically where in the process things are getting locked. It will help us, however, if you send us e-mail as soon as you get a hung session so that we can check the logfiles quickly ... if there are too many logins following the hung session, those logs will be overwritten. Thanks for your help ... All newcomers are welcome to attend. The taping will start at 2 pm in CIS 101. After attending this lecture, those wishing to use the lab will still need to get their paperwork in order and go on a safety tour. We will probably schedule a safety tour for early next week. After tomorrow's taping, the plan is to stop offering live Safety Training Lectures. Instead, new lab users will view the video tape followed by a written quiz. The NEW date and time is September 15th at 9:00 AM. This event is scheduled to be complete by 9:30 AM on the 15th. There will be follow up messages regarding computer shutdowns and SNF lab equipment shutdowns in the near future. As a reminder, this shutdown is necessary so that PG&E can make repairs and modification to the Panama Street - Via Palou substation. At the end of this year or early next year there will be another shutdown to put things back into their normal configuration. If you have any questions on this topic please feel free to ask.
