From bhuff at stanford.edu Fri Jan 11 12:16:37 2013 From: bhuff at stanford.edu (Brett Huff) Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2013 12:16:37 -0800 Subject: [labmembers] Allen Building door's project update and notification. Message-ID: All, As part of last year's renovation, the fire inspectors found that many of our existing fire doors had issues. Some require just new hardware (closers or latches), some require new doors and a handful require new frames be installed to brought up to basic fire codes. This work would have started in Nov but delays on permits pushed it to the holiday shutdown and into Jan to finish. Some of these have been only minor inconvenience but the door with the greatest impact is yet to finalized on the schedule. The gown room door is on of the more involved doors and requires the entire frame be pulled and replaced. When this occurs there will be about 3-4 hours, twice, where access into the gown room will be restricted (CLOSED). The plan is start the demolition and rebuild process at 6:00am to minimize the user impact. The trim out and repaint interruption will follow a day or two later when the structural and sheetrock is ready. We are considering Wed Jan 16th or Mon, Jan 21st as the two likely start dates. We do not want to leave it partially completed for a weekend. Your patience and support are appreciated. When this work is finally completed we will get our "full occupancy" status granted by the county. Brett E. Message-ID: <50F41FE5.80103@stanford.edu> SNF Lab Members: On Friday, a security alert was issued for Java Runtime Environment 7 (JRE7). A number of you are likely running JRE7 on your machines in order to run Badger ... although some of you are running JRE6. In an unprecedented rapid response, Oracle issued a new JRE (7u11) yesterday to fix these vulnerabilities. To me, that quick response indicates that Oracle views this as a very serious threat. As a result, I suggest that all of you check your Java version and update it if needed. If you are running a Windows machine, you should have an element named Java under your Control Panel. Under the Java tab, I believe, you should see an Update tab that will allow you to install the updated version. Note: during that process, you will be offered the opportunity to install the "Ask" toolbar. You do NOT need to install that in order to address these issues. I believe that this occurs if you are upgrading from more than a couple of versions. If you try to fire up Badger following your upgrade, you may see a window that says something like: "Cannot find javaws". If you see that, and if you have a standard windows configuration you should be able to point it to the proper version of javaws by first clicking the "C:\" main disk on which the OS lives. Then select "Program FIles" (if you have a 64-bit machine, you may need to select "Program Files (x86)" instead. From there select "Java", then "jre7", then "bin". Finally, click on the "javaws" item (not javaw) and click OK. That, I believe will get you back and operational. Let me know if you encounter any further problems. Monday, Jan. 21st. Message-ID: <75B27044-2071-4CA9-B41C-C96EE4BB0BCF@stanford.edu> All, The least intrusive day to change out the gown room door and frame appears to next Monday. Monday is a Stanford holiday but 1/2 of our trades people are not on holiday. The Plastic will go up first thing Monday morning. The old door and frame will be removed. The new frame and door will be installed. During this stretch form about 6:00am to roughly 10:00am the fab will be closed to access. If you have an emergency need for entry or anticipate an emergency need for entry please contact by cell or email by this Friday. After 10:00am Monday, the plastic will remain until the sheet rock and paint crews complete their work. There will be access through the plastic to the gown room during this time. Once we have the schedule for rock and paint on Tuesday I will let you know. I understand EE410 will need to get through several times and I will make certain the crew is aware and sensitive to your needs. Please be aware of any wet paint as you pass through the area. Today the work on the chem passthrough doors has started. There will be plastic in that area. If you are unable to find chemicals you need today please contact me directly and we will do our best to deliver quickly. Please think your needs out and plan ahead so you are not caught off guard. Your patience is appreciated as the door replacement activity is nearly completed. Brett E.
