Message-ID: <3BE36BF1.F9186378@snf.stanford.edu> Hello! You are receiving this email because you've been added (at my request) to the Process Staff email list. The purpose of this list is to allow everyone on the process staff to share their weekly reports with each other (and Jim, John, Dick and Mike, who are all also on this list.) I'm hoping this is one way to improve communication and help us all understand what we are all doing here (although this may border on the metaphysical). So... on future weekly reports, please just email them to process at snf.stanford.edu. Thanks, Mary -- Mary X. The plan is to remove the terminal and cabinets from the left side of the room and install metal wire rack shelving, to provide alternative storage for labmembers (so we can get as much stuff out of the lab as possible). This plan is, of course, subject to change and your comments and suggestions. But I thought it would be good to get something down, so we'd have something to work with. Attached is are two GIF files. The first one, lab1.gif, is a general outline of the CAD room. (The grid represents the layout of the tile flooring.) I haven't shown any of the stuff on the left side. The tables shown on the right are the ones that are in there right now. The second file, lab2.gif, is a proposed layout of shelving. The clearance required is, according to Bob Wheeler, between 36" and 44", depending on the typical number of occupants. Since there are actually few people in the CAD and SEM room at any time, he suggests that we could easily justify the 36" clearance number. In this plan, the "clearance" is the distance between the shelves and the backs of any chairs in front of the terminals (with the chairs pushed in.) I've put in 40" for clearance, just to be on the safe side. When chairs are pushed in, they add 4" (chairs without arms, that is -- we'll have to get rid of the chairs with arms, unless someone has a reason to keep them there.) The shelves shown are standard dimensions. If we go with the standard Metro-type wire rack shelves, 72" high, with four adjustable shelves, the total cost for the arrangement here will be about $2700. I'll try to lay out some colored tape on the floor some time this week, so we can get a feel for how it would actually look. I'd also like to remove the Mac on the right side and replace it with the Coral terminal, which is on the left side right now. Let me know what y'all think! Thanks, Mary My design assumptions: The clearance between -- Mary X. Lab2.gif -- this is what I sent yesterday. Looking at the layout, it seemed to me that the corners were inaccessible and therefore not usable. If you look at the available accessible space, it's about 32 lineal feet of 4-stack shelving. Lab3.gif -- a new proposal. There are no shelves along the back wall and the shelves sticking out are doubled. This gives us 37 lineal feet of 4-stack shelving. Also, I was thinking that people might be able to store their rollaround carts (allowing perhaps only one roll-around per group) against the back wall, between the shelves. Since the carts roll around, they can be moved to gain access to the shelves. Also, in case of earthquake, stuff will fall between the rows of shelves, not on to any people who may be using the CAD stations. I've laid out tape in the CAD room according to the Lab2.gif plan. I'll lay out some more tape for the Lab3.gif plan. What do you think? Mary -- Mary X. Let me know if you have time/are interested/are available, or propose another day. Anyway, just going through the numbers, if we make use of the shelves we already have, and order more to fit under existing tables, and if we use the Sterilite drawers which are 12" wide, 18" deep, and 7.5" high, a rough estimate says we can fit 440 boxes in the lab (??!??!!). I was rather thinking that if we had lab storage space for 200 users, we'd be in fine shape -- if this is true, we actually have loads of space to spare. There are a couple of possibilities here. First, we could get rid of some of the tall shelves, in order to gain some real estate. Second, we could allocate two or more boxes to heavy users. Third, we could get larger boxes in addition to the boxes we've decided on. I'm thinking that option #2 might not be useful. Randy True showed me that you can't fit four cassettes in a box -- you could of the old style box, but not the new ones that are supplied in the stockroom (which are slightly wider than the old ones.) But I think a mixture of options #1 and #3 might be good. We should get rid of, or reorganize, the racks which have inaccessible shelves (for example, the ones behind the litho scope or next to svgcoat.) And having larger boxes would be more effective use of some shelves which have deeper space (24", rather than 18") and would accomodate more boxes or people with 6" cassettes. Anyway, let me know what you think, and let's talk about it. When Uli and I do the final survey, I'd like to make sure that we are collecting all the data we need to make an informed decision... I have to admit that I know very little about it, except that a lot of new, never-been-in-a-lab-before students come through in batches and take turns picking up wafers and looking at them. I understand that this presents a significant workload for process staff, for not only training the students, but also supporting the behind-the-scenes processing of the material, so that the students' devices all get done by the end of the quarter. Anyway, I'm scheduled to meet with Krishna (who leads the class) tomorrow at 11. Does anyone want to come? Or, barring that, could you let me know what your concerns might be that we should discuss? If so, a message should go out to labmembers telling them this. 3) What level of committment does Krishna expect from the process staff? If I recall, there is alot of background litho to be done. 4) Safety training- anything more than the tape? 5) If there is a large response to class in terms of the number of students who want to take it, can the groups meet only Tues-Thurs? I'm sorry, but I'd hoped I would have detailed plans for the lab clean up for everyone to review -- needless to say, I spent this long holiday weekend not doing any work. I hope to have this mostly done by tomorrow. Pizza at noon? Whattaya think? Mary -- Mary X. Let me know what you think! General announcement (I think I will send this to labmembers@ snf) http://snf/News/LabCleanup.html Policies for storage inside the lab: http://snf/Labmembers/LabStorage.html Policies for storage outside the lab: http://snf/Labmembers/OutsideStorage.html I'm also thinking that it might be good to get some extra help installing shelves -- what about allowing people first pick on bins, if they help out?
