Message-ID: <3D2B8BBD.B6E3824D@snf.stanford.edu> Hi all -- As you are probably all aware now, Eaden Saw was the person who mistook glass for quartz, and processed her substrates through wbnonmetal (7/2, 4 pm), wbdiff (7/2, 4:30 pm), tylanpoly and tylan1 (7/3). It is clear that there was no malicious intent involved. And I would have to admit that the initial mistake of confusing glass and quartz was one that I could almost accept... the real damage was done because she neglected to recognize the problem, even when confronted by Eric, and delayed in reporting the problem until two days later -- and even then, only to the tylanpoly list. Right now, it appears that 14 people may have been directly affected by using wbdiff and/or tylanpoly. I should add that Eric persuaded Eaden to help him decontaminate wbdiff and wbnonmetal Wednesday evening, although at that point she was still quite certain she had quartz. Eaden is working as a contractor for Don Arnold at Exsigent. As you probably know, Don is very competent and a very good lab citizen. We have not decided what to do about Eaden, but will discuss this when Don returns from vacation in two weeks. In the meantime, Eaden is not to use the lab. One characteristic that Eaden and a few of our industrial labmembers exhibit is a lack of awareness that they are part of a larger community -- that they must complete their tasks even at the expense of other labmembers. There seems to be a complete lack of understanding of the normal give-and-take in interactions with others in a research environment. Sometimes, the push comes from the management (we all know who those companies are). Sometimes, as in this case, it's personal habit. In any case, we should really try to find ways where we can "encourage" these people/their management to become better lab citizens and to support better lab citizenship. Perhaps we should discuss this at our next staff meeting (July 17?) Just wanted to let you know... Mary -- Mary X. It's noon - 2 pm, at Gibbons Grove, next to the Terman building. Mike D. is the BBQ master, Dick will be flipping burgers, and John will be flipping (non-meat) burgers. The heatwave is supposed to run itself out tomorrow, so it should be a nice day. Also, I propose we have a process staff meeting next Wednesday, July 17. (Noon, pizza, or perhaps leftover BBQ.) Today (July 15) is the last day to register for the exhibit hall for free (otherwise, you pay $50.) You can register online at http://events.semi.org/semiconwest/ (follow the links to registration) or you can fax your registration in (I've attached the PDF form here.) This week is in San Jose, and is all device testing stuff, so I don't think this would be of much interest to us. But next week (July 22-24) is all about wafer processing and would definitely be interesting. Next week's exhibits take place in San Francisco. Please register today, if you are interested in attending. Please limit attendance to one day and plan in advance for your absence (coordinate with maintenance, other process staff members, labmembers, as necessary). And finally, please take notes -- at the next process staff meeting (7/31) we'll share what everyone's found -- although Semicon is really a state-of-the-art, industrial fab forum, there are lots of things there that could make life a lot easier for us here! These are science students who are doing summer research in an internship program here. They will be here Friday afternoon, July 26. There will be 20 students (yes, I know, a lot!) and I was thinking that two groups of 10 would be somewhat manageable (as before, one group inside, another group outside, then switch.)
