From mtang at snf.stanford.edu Wed Sep 3 07:31:00 2003 From: mtang at snf.stanford.edu (Mary Tang) Date: Wed, 03 Sep 2003 07:31:00 -0700 Subject: Tours Message-ID: <3F55FB24.B6DC1077@snf.stanford.edu> Hi all -- Would anyone be interested in giving a tour? The Stanford/Berkeley/MIT Nanotechnology Forum will be held on Sept. 17 (Thursday) and there will be tours at 5, 5:30, and 6, with a maximum of 8 people/tour. (We've asked that this time they control the number of people who show up. Last time, interest level was so high that we kept turning people away... We saw an interesting mixture of engineers, VC's, and consultants...) By the way, the forum that evening looks interesting -- Richard Smalley is speaking: http://www.quantuminsight.com/_MSB/ If you'd like do a tour, let me know -- Thanks, Mary -- Mary X. As John gently pointed out, the 17th is a Wednesday, not a Thursday. The Nanotech Forum generally takes place on Thursdays, but evidently this time around, it's on WEDNESDAY. By the way, I'll make sure there are plenty of extra suits on-hand before the tours -- assuming the tours will take about 45 minutes, there should be no more that two groups in the lab at once. Thanks, Mary -- Mary X. To summarize, there were several incidents within the last week or so which are suspected to be user-induced, or at the very least, problems with our training: (1. stsetch was run without a wafer inside; 2. drytek was put down for tuning problems, but was really OK; 3. problems with the wafersaw, due to low water pressure, were not documented, and subsequent problems are suspected to be due to misuse of the system; 4. just last night, problem with the stsetch was noted, but cleared without any documentation -- this just after our discussion about the lack of documentation on the wafersaw incidents.) There also are reports of several other instances where it seemed that perhaps you weren't too clear on procedure. Granted, there are a lot of procedures for everything in the lab -- but the underlying principle for all procedures in the lab is consideration for others -- consideration for maintenance and process (by communicating and providing information about any problems you encounter) and consideration for fellow labmembers (by operating equipment safely and properly, and making it available to others when you are not using it). By keeping this principle in mind, the procedures we have for working in the lab become straightforward. We know you rely on the resources here and thus don't want to prevent you from doing your work; however, we do feel that we need to keep tabs on your activities. Therefore, I'm writing to inform you that from now on your activities in the lab must be restricted to daytime, working hours (7 am - 6 pm, Monday-Friday.) Please remove any equipment reservations you may have that are outside this time period. This restriction will remain in effect until you have demonstrated sufficiently conscientious use of the lab over a significant period of use. Please use this as an opportunity to work with staff and other lab members -- we are all available to answer any questions or offer help. Mary -- Mary X. Is anything missing?!! I have noticed, since my return from holiday last month, a number of smaller items that are missing. Now as I reach for some of my tools-- I cannot finds them in the places I left them. It just came to my attention this evening that this is sadly becoming a trend here at SNF/CIS. Lost in September and now noted as missing: Several Lab timers. 2 of 4 in the ebeam lab. West clock count up count down timers. My digital stop watch from my desk. Black with Chew marks! bad digital on the RH cells. A cheap Radio Shack Digital Multimeter (DMM) in the Ebeam Lab I keep in a drawer. My HP issued HP 790 DMM from in my file cabinet which was found forced open upon my return from vacation. (It plainly is labeled with my name scratched into it inside the battery case, on the back cover, and inside the rubber armor coat. MY Name and 'SEM and Analysis Lab' were labeled in Sharpie pen on the top of the yellow armor coat.) One very old Mitutoyo 100 mm Digital calipers with many dents scratches. My favorite tool from college. One HP Dual output 0-20 volt DC Power Supply (It has an HP Labs calibration sticker on it 2-1999 and my name and initials (JWC) on the bottom plate.) These all were my personal equipment I brought in to use in my job here. I am saddened to realize this trend of loss of small tools and tooling in our facility. Lets be especially vigilant in coming weeks to put this problem to rest. Thank you for being watchful. James Conway Charley wrote: > Users > Do not break into the cabinet in the S-800 room.
