periodically a hardware error message appears, however the only thing wrong that I can tell is that the machine has automatically jumped way out of focus.  if you bring it back into focus and do a scan, it again jumps way out of focus, but will do the scan, so you get a no valid data points error.  the machine then goes back to its normal behavior, until it decides to repeat this process.
